A bride came to me wanting a tropical sunset wedding. Bright colors, lush greens, the whole thing. Very clear vision. Very confident about it.
I made her the tropical mood board she asked for.
I also low-key made her a second one. The one I actually envisioned for her after spending about three minutes on her Instagram.
Deep plums. Rich burgundies. Moody emerald greens. Mystical, layered, a little witchy, very much the aesthetic of a woman who wore jewel tones and did yoga and had strong feelings about crystals. Which, for the record, I respect immensely.
She looked at the tropical board first, and immediately said “no… no that’s not it.” Then she looked at the second one and said “holy sh*t. That’s me. I had no idea that’s what I wanted.”
That’s the moment I live for.
Pinterest is a starting point, not a personality test
Most people come to me with inspiration images. Which I love, genuinely, it gives us a place to start. But inspiration images show you what you like visually. They don’t always show you what actually belongs to you.
There’s a difference between a style you’re drawn to and a design that feels like it grew out of who you are as a person. My job is to find the second one, sometimes even when the client is convinced they want the first one.
How I actually figure out who you are
It starts before we even talk about flowers.
I want to know what you wear. What you’ve experienced together as a couple. What your family is like, loud and dancing all night or more reserved and elegant. What drew you to your venue specifically, because that tells me a lot about what you’re actually chasing.
And yes, I will look at your Instagram. Not in a weird way. In a I can tell within three photos whether you’re a tropical sunset person or a moody jewel tone forest witch way. Both are valid. Both are incredible to design for. But they are not the same wedding.
The “tropical sunset bride” ended up with a forest floor design. Moss mounds on the tables with flowers growing up out of them like they came straight from the ground. Little mushrooms tucked into the greenery. The whole thing felt like stepping into an enchanted woodland. Her guests were completely transported.
She did not get the tropical sunset wedding she came in asking for.
She got something so much more hers that multiple people came up to me during the event to say it felt exactly like her. That’s the goal every single time.
What this means for you
If you come to me with a Pinterest board I’m going to look at it and I’m going to take it seriously as a starting point. And then I’m going to ask you a lot of questions that have nothing to do with flowers.
Because the design that makes your guests feel something, the one that makes your photographer lose track of time, the one you look back at years later and think yes that was so completely us, that design doesn’t come from a mood board.
It comes from you. I just help find it.
